Marriage: Be mindful of the clichés

There are so many clichés we read and hear when it comes to what leads to a happy marriage. After reading an article by marriage counsellor Susan Heitler in Psychology Today recently, we once again realised that a lot of the everyday relationship advice we hear is easier said than done. As a matter of fact, many of these “recipes for success” might just lead to the downfall of a marriage or long-term commitment.

Have you never thought that arguments tend to get out of hand? Continuing an argument into the early hours of the morning might be more harmful than taking some time out, reflecting on the issue and revisiting it once both parties have done the necessary cooling off and are ready for a rational discussion?

There are quite a few more thoughts that turn many a cliché on its head, like “love conquers all”… Okay, we might be getting a bit too cynical now.
