Becoming a parent can be one of the most daunting and fulfilling experiences in life.
But sometimes the path to parenthood can have unexpected twists and turns, leading to options like adoption, fertility treatment or surrogacy – each option presenting unique joys and challenges of its own. Everyone who has gone or is going through this journey have different stories to share – let’s talk about it!
In this Iris Session, David O’Sullivan unpacked some of these journeys with adoptive moms Alexa Matthews and Jana Zuidema.

David is no stranger to the South African media-landscape, having worked at Talk Radio 702 for 19 years and 11 years as a sports presenter on SABC2 and SABC3. He is the co-author of two best-selling books: “The Penguin Book of South African Sports Trivia” and “The Extraordinary Book of South African Cricket”. He regularly MCs corporate events.

Alexa Matthews is a social worker who has worked in range of communities and sectors, including street children, homeless people and also gives counselling in the pre- and post-adoption process. Although she has many stories to share from this background, Alexa is herself an adoptive mom and has her own story to share about this journey. She has also blogged extensively about this experience on her blog, https://theoutrageousintrovert.wordpress.com.
Jana Zuidema is a physiotherapist and an adoptive mom. She works part time in private practice and the rest of the time she is mother to two beautiful adopted daughters. She has a keen interest in the outdoors and promoting adoption to anyone she meets. She is involved with a charity supporting victims of human trafficking. Most of all she loves spending time with her family.
