What it does
RX Breakup is a step-by-step programme designed to help you move on after a breakup or pull the plug on an unhealthy relationship in just 30 days. Created by relationship therapist, Jane Reardon, and Stila Cosmetics Founder, Jeanine Lobell, the app delivers professionally developed self-help techniques to navigate you through difficult breakups in the digital age.
The 30-day game plan unlocks a new topic every day to help you work through your emotions relative to where you are in your breakup, from withdrawal to anger management. Each day is divided into three key steps including a writing task and activity based on the daily topic.
At 5 p.m., when our resolve generally takes a dip, the app sends a ‘nudge’ with nuggets of wisdom to help see you through the rest of the day.
How it helps
What I like best about this app is the ‘reprogramming’ aspect. They say it takes a minimum of 21 days to break a habit, and the app does just that by rewiring your negative behaviour patterns to provide lasting change over the 30 days.
The app takes the tone of a trusted girlfriend, however unlike some well-meaning besties who offer good-intentioned but often short-sighted advice, RX Breakup gives constructive, tried-and-tested guidance that’s both supportive and based on the founder’s experience and credentials as a relationship therapist.
Another wonderful feature of RX is how it redirects negative energy into positive actions. For example, instead of drunk dialing your ex, the app invites you to rather write down what it is you want to say. These daily writing exercises allow for introspection and really do help to provide some fresh perspective. You’re essentially allowing yourself a chance to reflect on what went wrong and how not to make the same mistakes going forward.
Conclusion
While the app is targeted towards women, there is definitely the opportunity to expand it to include men. Because, contrary to popular belief, men have feelings to. If not ready to live your best single life after the programme is complete, you’ll at the very least be in a better mental space after the 30 days. With the app being free, there’s nothing to lose except your emotional baggage.
“I’ve never written an app review and usually it’s because I don’t have much to say about it. But this time I felt I needed to say something. If at the end of the 30 days you still feel completely destroyed, at the very least you leave with some perspective. It really helped me reach an understanding of who I am without my partner and that that person is just as good and pleasant as the one who had a boyfriend. This kept me on track and away from breaking the no contact period and now that it’s over I don’t even know if I want to contact him.” – twin sized mattress

What the experts say about it
“Although the app may bring up uncomfortable feelings, it maintains a supportive tone. By the time your 30 days wind to a close, you should be in a better emotional place than you were when you first started.” David Nield, Popular Science
