My 100-Day Challenge to build a better me

Change is a slow and steady process of step-by-step improvement, all the more so when the object of your improvement is yourself. If it works, and even if it doesn’t it’s a process you can share with the world, by blogging and vlogging your way to the new and better you.

How do people become good at things? They focus on a goal and work at it each and every day, and in doing so develop good habits and drop the bad ones. We think there is some sort of magical formula to success, wealth or happiness in life, but it’s as simple as that, most of the time.

I wanted — needed — 2018 to be a big year for myself.  I knew I had to be better at everything in order to create tangible change and make myself more successful at work. I knew I had to better utilise my personal resources and become more diligent.

To truly commit to this plan, I had to pin my intentions to a mast. I had to make a platform for how I was going to do better in life, and do better things each and every day.

My idea was to create a personal series for my YouTube channel called #100DaysToBetter. The premise being that for 100 days, I would do one small thing to make my life better in every way. Nothing too bold or extreme, just manageable things that touched on every area of life.

If I stuck to my guns, I felt confident that I could create a positive change in my professional life. I just had to get started.

The 100 things ranged from trying new outdoor activities to enjoying some reading in bed on a weekend morning. Looking back, some things seemed a little insignificant, but the process itself made me focus on bettering my life and who I am.

After every 10 days I would make a vlog — a video blog — about it. I was slowly learning the art of visual storytelling, and how to film, edit and narrate my ever evolving idea.

And with that, things started to change on the job front. My professional foundation is radio, podcasts, and writing, but the future of content creation is in video.

With each new episode of my #100DaysToBetter Challenge, this medium became more comfortable and exciting for me, and my desire to seek and complete new projects in this field began to grow.

Rather than just making videos for myself, I started to pick up some entry level work, which then built into something far more significant. I may have lacked experience or technical know-how, but the positive momentum I had created took care of any doubts.

A long time colleague in the online space wanted to do something in the field of sporting creativity. One meeting led to more, and we started making progress towards creating a new business venture. My video skills were central to the initial steps of this plan, and were bolstered by the inclusion of an ex-rugby player looking for the next step in his career.

With the habits developed around being ‘better’ in 2018, and aligning that with these other elements, a new business became a reality. It all happened fast, proving that once you get into the habit of doing what is good for yourself, you can make the most of opportunities that come your way.

Why not start your own 100 day challenge? Maybe you can change your professional life for the better, by simply being better in all that you do.
