How to boost productivity at work

Although the “work-from-home” and “flexi-time” movement seems to be gaining popularity, many of us still have no other choice but to negotiate conventional office spaces and -hours in our day-to-day lives.

This leads to many frustrations and challenges – especially in terms of when and where we are at our most productive.

So what are we to do?

There’s an interesting article by productivity blog Zapier, which breaks down the key elements to productivity in a way that made a lot of sense to us. Some of the basic elements addressed by this article:

– Some of us tend to be more productive in the wee hours of the morning; others late at night. We need to find ways to leverage these times to count in our favour.

Our surroundings play a key role in our ability to perform optimally.

– An interesting example provided by this article, is that temperature plays a very important role. If you’re feeling cold most of the time, you’re very likely to deplete your energy resources much sooner than you would under circumstances where you’re experiencing a comfortable temperature.

– Noise is another debatable issue. While some people seem to prefer music and noise while they are working, others do not. This depends on the work you need to perform. Creative work seems to thrive on noise, while work that requires deep focus might require silence. Try to create or simulate an environment suits you best.

– Light also plays a key role in productivity. Experiment with this. Some people are more productive in natural light, others need icy, bright, cold light to be able to perform optimally.
