When she was younger, Refiloe Temudzani never thought she would be able to own her own home, but life seems to have exceeded her expectations. This is her story.
Ever since I was a little girl I have always been driven.
I saw being independent as a good measure of success and I worked hard to realise my dreams. Although I have a wonderful, supportive family, I always had a desire to own my own home. A place where I was in control, where I could choose the finishes, move the walls and the like. While I had rented in the past, being able to have the security of my own property and to know that I was contributing towards my future was very important to me.
I was able to finally realise my dream when I qualified for affordable housing and moved into my new home.
It has a lounge, a kitchen and one bathroom and importantly two bedrooms, so my daughter could have her own room for the first time. Being able to manage my own finances and pay my own bond is the most wonderful feeling for me. I am also the eldest granddaughter in my family to have achieved this and it makes me so happy to see my family proud of me!
Owning my first home has also meant more financial freedom for me.
I recently got married and moved out of this house to live with my husband. However, I still own the property and now receive a small rental income from it. In time I hope to be able to invest some of this money towards another house or something for my daughter.
