Gary Kirsten might currently be known as the greatest batsman of the modern era, but before that, between 1993 and 2004, Gary was a remarkable opening batsman. Kirsten held the record for highest innings (188 not-out) in a World Cup during the 1996 World Cup. His record was later broken by Chris Gayle in 2015 and after him by Martin Guptill. Kirsten retired from professional cricket in 2004 and was offered the position of coach to the Indian National team in 2007, he accepted. He led India to their 2011 ICC World Cup victory and is often praised as being responsible for the clear improvement of everyone in the team. M.S. Dhoni, the captain of the Indian team, has described Kirsten as “the best thing to ever happen to Indian cricket”. Here he is with his team, celebrating the World Cup victory:
